Credit the Group from the Field

In his first ever livestream video, Craig explains the importance of giving credit to the group. And he gives credit to all the groups that have helped him with his career!

Here’s what Craig says in the video

Hey! Nice! Ok. Thanks for putting up with my technical difficulties here. So, Craig Freshley here, I am all about good group decisions and I’m going to try to start using Periscope for some live streaming.

Now there’s something I do want to tell you about and that is, this past week I gave a keynote speech for a group in Gardiner. As I often do when I give keynote speeches, I asked them about my Tips. I’ve written all these Good Group Tips and I handed them all out and I asked everybody, “What do you think are the best tips, those tips that are going to be most useful for you here in the city of Gardiner?” And one of the tips that they said was really useful to them was Credit the Group. You can read about Credit the Group at my website CraigFreshley.com [the Good Group Tip I wrote about this is here] but I’m going to tell you basically about it.

What it means is that when were making good group decisions it doesn’t matter so much who gets the credit or the blame. In fact, Harry Truman said something like, “Imagine how much we could get done if we weren’t concerned with who got the credit.” When I am part of a high functioning team, I don’t care who gets the credit. I want to give the credit to the team as a whole. I have an ethic of giving up my ideas to the group and thus letting the group criticize my ideas without criticizing me. I don’t take it personally. I give freely to the group and then when the group has successes, we all credit the group.

You know it’s kind of like where I am in my career. I just feel so blessed to have made a successful career out of helping groups make good decisions. And it’s not all because of me, its because of the groups that I have been in, and it’s because of the whole community that I live in. I’m very happy to credit the group. If you want to learn more, go to my website CraigFreshley.com you can find the good group tip called Credit The Group and if you want to make a comment or if you disagree with what I’m saying, I’d love to hear what you think and thanks for watching my first ever Periscope live stream. Yay!

  1. Great start, Craig. As we have discussed, in Lewiston Public Schools we are using interest-based bargaining (IBB) in the contract negotiations between the School Committee and the Lewiston Education Association, the union for teachers and for educational technicians. The very essence of IBB is working as a group, and that has been the key is our success. You are right on – credit the group.
