Recognizing the crucial role that public libraries play in promoting civil discourse and serving as community hubs, I am dedicated to delivering engaging and interactive programming that fosters dialogue and understanding across differences. In a world often marked by division and discord, my mission is to spread hope and demonstrate that peace is achievable. I believe in making the world a better place, one conversation at a time.

I share much of the wisdom I have gained through working with groups in my bestselling book, Together We Decide: An Essential Guide For Making Good Group Decisions (Greenleaf Book Group, 2023).

In 2019, I was honored to receive the American Civic Collaboration Award for creating and facilitating Make Shift Coffee Houses. These community gatherings provided a space where individuals from diverse political backgrounds could come together to engage in dialogue and understand each other’s perspectives. Professionally Facilitated Community Conversation

On a Controversial Topic of Your Choice

In our polarized society, fostering respectful conversations is crucial for building strong communities. Unfortunately, many communities lack platforms for constructive dialogue, leading to increased division and polarization. My expertise lies in facilitating respectful discussions aimed at fostering shared understanding. These forums are not debates, and the goal isn’t to reach a single correct answer or find common ground as a group.

Instead, the aim is to foster mutual understanding across differences. I guide discussions using topics to frame conversations, but the central question is almost always: “Why do you believe that?

I am prepared to expertly facilitate a respectful conversation on a topic of your choice, or perhaps you might like one of these topics that have proven to be very successful:

Patriotism: What does it mean to be patriotic?

  • How do we measure how patriotic a person is?
  • Is a natural born citizen more patriotic than a ‘New American’?
  • Is a person in uniform more patriotic than a person in shorts and flip flops?
  • Is a veteran more patriotic than a war protester?
  • Is it patriotic to speak against the government?
  • Is it okay to not recite the pledge of allegiance?
  • Is it okay to take a knee during the National Anthem?
  • When you think of a “truly patriotic act,” what are you thinking of?

Freedom: What does it mean to you?

  • Which is the most important freedom in your life?
  • Has your freedom ever been endangered by a different belief?
  • Is it okay if your idea of freedom collides with your neighbor’s?
  • Have you ever felt an absence of freedom?
  • Was it justified?
  • Are there freedoms you are most afraid of losing? And why?

Invite me to facilitate a meaningful conversation in your community around a topic of your choice that is dividing your community. I’ll bring my high energy and professional skills to create an impactful experience for your community, in a ready-made program that requires minimal logistical support from your staff.
